Often you’ll hear old gamers enthuse about this booklet. Just as often you’ll hear somebody vituperate it as useless. Maybe both are correct.

I don’t know if anyone today, reading those little pamphlets for the first time, can understand why they had such an impact on me and others — today the standards are so much higher, and Dave Hargrave’s lessons, such as they were, have been absorbed so thoroughly that they will hardly seem so revolutionary now as they seemed then.
Much criticism was made of Hargrave’s combat mechanics, to the point where many Game Masters simply used either their own versions, or those of TSR [ citation needed ].
