Lapierre recounts the struggle against this regime interspersed with the stories of Nelson Mandela and those of Christiaan Barnard and Helen Lieberman two upper class whites who ignored the legal restrictions of apartheid by actively working to aid their fellow black and colored residents of South Africa.
