It just feels more like an empty cash grab than anything else, like Shan was trying too hard to write something more gruesome and “adult” for more grown-up Cirque du Freak fans. The book has a wonderful story, it shows the story of the vampire, Larten Crepsley who previously appeared in the Saga of Darren Shansince his childhood until he meets Darren. I also liked how each part of the book had a quote like; “something somewhere, and or someone” that is not a quote from the novel, I’m just writing that so I don’t spoil anything important.

Does anybody else have the experience of wanting to read further because you love Larten Crepsley, but also not wanting to read further because you are afraid it’ll end too quick?

I read all the Cirque Du Freak books and fell in love with the aaction and the way he showed vampires.

It was not what I expected. It was like a contest, the many tribes of mankind competing to see who could commit the worst atrocities.

Larten abandons his training, leaving Wester and Seba behind as he embarks on a journey to find his own purpose. There’re more infuriatingly intriguing lartej. Especially this instalment will make near to no sense to you if you’re not already familiar with the world. There are no happenings that grip you or keep you engaged.

That leaves the last quarter of the book being a place where actually something happens – and this is the part that got Ocean of Blood a three-star rating instead of a lower one.

I’m certainly intrigued to see where Larten’s story goes from here as that was one heck if a cliffhanger ending, which I’ve come to expect from Darren over the years. Set free by their master, Larten and Wester are released from the shackles of being unwavering members of the vampire clan. Strong, steady and utterly devoted to Larten, her story’s resolution gives way to my second notable character, and also the devastating cliffhanger we end on. Then Larten did that for a decade or two and moped.

There are several scenes of violence which, while wonderfully written, may be disturbing to sensitive readers.
